You can't expect Ram Gopal Varma to make a heartwarming romantic film, can you? Prabhakaran should stick to his roots and make films that will not hamper the image he earned through his directorial debut.ĭo yourself a favour and give IKK a miss and instead watch Ok Ok, if you have a DVD handy.Saw "Engeyum Kadhal" today.No new things in the film except the flawless filmography.Harris' songs add a special dimension to this film.I have never witnessed a crowd with this much energy as they made relentless noise throughout the film in the theater that i watched in Chromepet.So much for watching it in the first day first show itself.Hansika is like an angel.No words to describe her cuteness.Jayam Ravi really fits like a T in this role.Prabhu Deva's direction has improved a lot.But still a little more attention to details is missing.The opening song gave me Goose bumps after seeing Prabhu Deva in full flow.All the songs were filmed with a gr8 effort and especially the Nangai song which rocked the entire theater.A one line story and a one line screenplay but what makes this movie a special one?. Prabhakaran's direction is aimless and proves why some directors are best at doing films in genres they are most comfortable in. I loved the songs in OK OK, but not even a single one is worth of listening on loop in IKK.
Santhanam repeats his role from Ok Ok and many other films where he has played hero's friend who is an expert at understanding women with cheap one-liners. Udhay tries to impress with a happy-go-lucky face while Nayanthara has a cliched role in which she speaks normal Tamil while her parents speak with thick Coimbatore accent. Her Malayali friend speaks fluent Malayalam sometimes and also fluent Tamil with no accent on some occasions. For instance, since Nayanthara plays a Tamilian, she's always seen with vibhuti on her forehead, while her Malayali friend with chandanam. There's so much of stereotyping in the film and it is so evident throughout. I don't mind if he actually tried something different but this is an effort that make his impressive debut look weak. I still can't fathom the fact how Prabhakaran, who proved his mettle with Sundarapandian, would even attempt to do something so different than his last film. Apparently, those are the only few funny scenes that stand out in the film while the rest of the scenes featuring Santhanam and Udhay turn out to be a bore. When the first trailer of the film was released online, the makers smartly included the funniest lines from the film to impress the audience. The film is proof to the fact that Santhanam is indeed running out of jokes and some of his lines hardly even evoke any laughter nowadays. Story wise, Ok OK and IKK are more or less similar, but the former was outright funny while the latter falls flat. With the help of Mayil, will Kathir sweep Pavitra off her feet or not? This forms the rest of the story. But he doesn't have the courage to express his feelings to her, and, therefore, takes the help of his best friend Mayil (Santhanam). When Kathirvelan (Udhayanidhi) goes to Coimbatore to reconcile his brother-in-law with his sister, he falls head over heels for Pavitra (Nayanthara) at first sight.
Idhu Kathirvelan Kadhal is one such film that fails to live up to the expectations of Ok OK, which also featured Udhayanidhi and Santhanam in the lead. While I agree he has an impressive track record of hits in his career, it should also be noted that his presence has gone in vain in some of the most anticipated Tamil films.
